The mill was commissioned by Pieter de Gilde in 1844 as the successor to a wooden mill destroyed by fire. In 1869, the mill was sold to Arie van Beek. In 1920, his family established N.V. Van Beek's Handelmaatschappij with a second branch in Middelharnis and headquarters in the grain warehouses in Rotterdam. After the crisis of the 1930s, only the mill in Zuidland remained in operation. The mill remained in operation for milling until 1954. After this, the mill stood still and entered a period of decay. In 1969 the then municipality of Zuidland bought the mill and had it restored in grinding condition in 1972 and 1976. Since then, the mill has been grinding for human consumption on a voluntary basis and these products are sold in its own mill store.
