Near the former village of Buiksloot in Amsterdam lies mill d'Admiraal, built in 1792 as a chalk and tras mill. Tras is ground tuff and a raw material for mortar. Chalk was used as dye and mixed with linseed oil as putty, among other things.
In 1960, a local restoration committee acquired ownership of the mill through donation. Foundation Krijtmolen d'Admiraal starts a major restoration in 1966. On 4 November 1967, a grinding capable d'Admiraal is opened. A limited restoration followed in the 1990s. Since 2000, the mill can be seen turning and grinding regularly again.
