The Middle and Eastern Dunes are dune grasslands as they should be: open, sparse and full of flowers and insects. Here, the blue-winged grasshopper jumps around; a grasshopper that deposits its eggs in the sand. Big thyme, yellow wallow, carline thistle and dune violet bloom. Here, the stonechat nests late in the season and even the nuthatch breeds in the undergrowth. The area is used as a water catchment area by Evides and is grazed by a herd of Exmoor ponies and cattle.
