The castle, situated in dry moats that are still partially present, consists of four partially 14th-century wings around a small courtyard and a substantial round 15th-century tower. The towers, bay windows, stepped gables, roofs and use of various types of natural stone and brick give the castle an almost picturesque appearance. Since the 14th century, the castle has remained within the family through inheritance. It is unclear who is responsible for the garden design. Various names and plans are known, including those of Jean Gindra, but also of the German Peter Custodis and the German Louis Fuchs, who worked in Belgium. Mheer, after the village of the same name, comes from the word 'mere or muddy place', possibly an indication of the local dry valley.
