Cycle route Monastery and Castles in South Limburg
Wittem, Berghem, Slenaken
This cycle route through southern Limburg takes you past a wealth of historical sights. As you cycle through the picturesque hilly landscape, you will be transported to a world of centuries ago.
You'll pass the imposing Neuborg Castle, from which you'll have stunning views during the route. Although the castle is not open to the public, it is a feast for the eyes. Further on, you'll pass Kasteel De Bongard, first mentioned in 1373. Surrounded by a beautiful garden, this castle offers an oasis of tranquility.
In 1732, Count Ferdinand of Plettenberg had a monastery built for the Capuchin Fathers from Cologne. After their expulsion during the French Revolution, Klooster Wittem fell into disrepair. Years later, after the Redemptorists took up residence there, a new monastery was built. If you are interested, you can make an appointment for a guided tour of the monastery.
You will have to pedal quite a bit at times to conquer the hills, but the beautiful view makes it more than worth it! During this route, you will both climb and descend as you pass by the most breathtaking sights.
