Memorial Jac. P. Thijsse - Den Burg
In a pond on the Elemert in Den Burg is the monument that artist and writer Jan Wolkers made for Jac. P. Tijsse. He was one of the founders of the Vereeniging tot Behoud van Natuurmonumenten. With the monument, Wolkers honoured Thijsse's commitment to nature conservation and love for the Texel landscape. The transparent panels and flowing forms symbolise the fragility and power of nature, a theme close to the hearts of both Thijsse and Wolkers.
The title ‘Unconcerned’ refers to the casual way Thijsse approached nature. Wolkers, who himself had a deep connection to Texel, designed a serene monument that symbolises both the fragility and the vitality of the island. It invites visitors to reflect on nature and its preservation.
