One of the first residents of Martenastate was Duco Martena, after whom the estate is named. The last resident, Duco Martena van Burmania Vegelin van Claerbergen (1859-1894), donated the estate to the church council of Koarnjum. Due to the deteriorated state of the original building, it was decided to demolish it in 1899 and replace it with the current castle-like house in Neo-Renaissance style. To preserve a piece of history, some façade stones from the old estate were incorporated into the walls of the new building.
Shortly after the new house was built, the surrounding landscape park was transformed into a publicly accessible walking park. This serene park features a long, low hill that holds the family graves of the estate’s former noble residents, serving as a silent reminder of the rich history of Martenastate.
