The Maarnse Zandgat is a nature reserve on the site where sand used to be mined, next to the A12 motorway. Around the year 2000, it was decided that nature could take its course there.
More than a decade later, the reserve was opened to the public and people could walk around the lake and along the hills.
In the middle of the lake is an island with boulders. The old turntable next to the lake still refers to the site's past, where a train track used to run.
From Driebergseweg, you have a nice vantage point over the area from the forest, where you can descend a staircase and soon walk towards the tranquillity.
