In the Walburgiskerk in Zutphen is a unique chain library from the 16th century. It was one of the first public reading rooms, with the intention to 'preserve people for the true faith by letting them read good books'. But books regularly disappeared, so it was soon decided to chain the books. Hence the term 'chain library'.
The Librije was founded by two church masters, Conrad Slindewater and Herman Berner, after the model of the bookrooms of Zutphen monasteries. After the library had been forgotten for a while, it was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century. The only other comparable libraries are in Italy (Cesena) and Great Britain (Hereford).
