You can only see this StreetArt project if you are waiting in front of the bridge on the Antoniestraat side. This drawbridge, called Long Bridge and called The Paint Roller because of its shape, is the canvas for a tribute to the city link Haarlem has had with sister city Mutare in Zimbabwe for more than 25 years. Since 2011, a work of art by a Zimbabwean artist has graced the bridge.
Amigo Bondiya (Masvingo, Zimbabwe 1978) studied applied art and design at Bulawayo Polytechnic and graduated in advertising design. He currently teaches himself at the Polytechnical Art School in Harare. His art is realistic and abstract, illustrating the challenges people face on a daily basis.
The Amigo design executed by two IJmuiden-based painting companies features the sun, the moon, a typical African baobab tree and a dove of peace in bright colours. Suddenly, waiting for the bridge is not so bad at all.
