One of the northern Randmeren is the Ketelmeer. The lake borders Dronten, Kampen and the North East Polder and is 3,500 hectares in size. When the eastern part of Flevoland was reclaimed in 1956, the Ketelmeer was created.
Role in the book Vogeleiland:
There are several nature islands in this lake. Marianne, Berend and Pup lived on one of these islands. Berend often sailed across the Ketelmeer to go to Kampen. But he could also often be found on the Ketelmeer for his work as a muskrat catcher.
One evening, Berend had not been on the island for several days and Pup decided to go to Kampen herself. She wanted to know what the outside world was like and whether the ‘tame people’ were really as different as they were. It was already dark. There was no boat, so she had to swim across the Ketelmeer. Arriving at the reed beds of Kampen, she hid among the reeds. Almost two cyclists had spotted her. ‘Did I just see a naked woman there?’ They didn't see her again, but Pup saw them. Tame people were not at all different from her. Still, she dared not go any further and swam back quickly.
