Cycle route on the Kamper Island
Kampen, Kampereiland, IJsselmuiden
Combine history with natural beauty on this route from Kampen to Kamper Island, located north of Kampen and IJsselmuiden. You start at the TOP Kampen, where you can easily park and start your route. Via the centre of the old Hanseatic city of Kampen, with its impressive city bridge, stately gates and city harbour, you cycle over the dikes and along the IJssel. After passing IJsselmuiden, you reach the wide views and peaceful polders of the Kamper Island. This area, created by centuries of struggle against the water, has a rich history and a special culture.
Kamper Island has been owned by the city of Kampen since 1363 and is still largely leased to farmers. The dozens of historic farms are a characteristic sight in the landscape. Special features are the house numbers that refer to the order in which the farms were leased: the oldest farms have the lowest numbers. One of the pearls of the island is Museum Farm ERF, where you can take a look at life and work on the Kamper island over the centuries. Here you will discover how farms have adapted to the unique polder landscape and the demands of the times.
Nature lovers will enjoy the rich flora and fauna of the Kamper Island. A highlight is the Ramspolplaat, an important nature reserve where you can spot numerous water birds and experience the dynamics of the water. The combination of historical value, agricultural traditions and natural beauty makes Kampereiland a place you won't soon forget. Hop on your bike and discover this special part of the Netherlands, where the past and nature come together seamlessly.
