At the end of World War II, the Allies dropped weapons and ammunition for the resistance in many places in this area. On the night of 10 and 11 October 1944, after one such drop in the hamlet of Rustenburg, 12 resistance fighters were trapped by treachery. During a fierce firefight between the resistance group and German soldiers, one man died on the spot, a second fell wounded into the hands of the Germans. The others still managed to flee to Houtlust, located further away, but were found there and shot immediately, as were the farmer and his father. The farmer's wife and her children were sent away, the cattle taken to the slaughterhouse and the farm set on fire by the Germans. This event is known as ‘the Battle of Rustenburg’ and is still commemorated every year.
