The picturesque quays along the A are among the most charming and photogenic spots in the city. The A is connected to the Reitdiep, which until 1877 had an open link to the Wadden Sea. This meant that back then, the tides of the sea influenced the water levels of the A.
For centuries, the A was the beating heart of Groningen’s trade. The beautiful old warehouses along the quay, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, served as storage for grain, peat, and other goods. The eastern quay was used for loading and unloading ships at high tide, while the western quay was used at low tide. That’s why they are called Hoge der A (High A) and Lage der A (Low A).
The trade may have changed, but the harbour’s atmosphere remains. Many warehouses have been repurposed into homes, offices, or restaurants. Want to experience the A from the water? Book a city cruise with Kool from Groningen Central Station or rent a SUP board from Teuntje de Slak.
