On the edge of the Hemmen Estate you will find the castle garden and the old kitchen garden of former Hemmen Castle. A map from 1832 already shows this walled garden, but it is probably even much older. Vegetables, fruit and string beans used to be grown here. A grape greenhouse was built against one of the walls.
After World War II, the garden slowly decayed. Fortunately, plans were made in the 1990s to restore the garden to its former glory. In 1995, the garden was officially reopened and can be visited daily between 1 May and 31 October.
A visit to the classicist gardens brings you a walk full of plant discoveries. Shrubs, flowers, herbs, aquatic plants, various vegetables and a number of espaliered trees pass by. In the centre of the garden is a beautiful rose garden with rose dome. Each plant section is surrounded by yew hedges.
All in all, the garden has more than 600 different plants! One plant blooms in spring, another in summer, and yet another in autumn. So a visit to the castle garden is always a nice surprise!
