The castle is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the Netherlands. Construction probably began between 1325 and 1350 under the direction of Lodewijk Berthout van Berlaer, lord of Helmond. The design included a square perimeter, large round towers at each corner and a moat.
The family wanted this impressive castle to project their power and at the same time create a strategic defence point on the north-eastern border of the Duchy of Brabant. The architecture of the castle followed the trends of the time, while the stone structure considerably improved the quality of life for the Berlaers.
In addition to the castle, there is also an art gallery, about a 3-minute walk from the castle. Here you can admire art and photography of international stature.
