In 1987, then museum director Frans Haks chose Alessandro Mendini as architect. He considered him a jack-of-all-trades and convinced everyone of Mendini's artistic potential and versatility. Together, Haks and Mendini came up with a programme of requirements that was realised in 1994.

In front of the beautiful building you will find a bridge and cycle path to the museum island, which are a work of art in themselves. Through the blue entrance gate you reach the colourful museum. The golden tower standing prominently in the middle is the museum's depot. There are also several pavilions like the Starck Pavilion, the Mendini Pavilion and the Lucchi Pavilion.

In 2010, work was done to revitalise the building. Several designers contributed to the improved building. The Job Lounge, a reception area, a new restaurant and an innovative information centre are definitely worth a visit.
