The monument Grenadiers and Jagers commemorates the military of the Regiment Garde Grenadiers and Jagers. The soldiers were killed in 1940 during a German attack around Ypenburg airfield. The airport was recaptured by Dutch soldiers, but this was at the cost of the lives of 515 soldiers. 208 of these soldiers belonged to the Regiment Garde Grenadiers en Jagers.
Meanwhile, houses have been built on the former Ypenburg airfield. The streets are named after the fallen soldiers. The water where the monument stands is also named after Captain Wilhelm Böttger.
The text on the monument reads:
IN MEMORY OF OUR COMRADES IN ARMS
WHO IN THE MAY DAYS OF 1940 AND AFTER
HERE AND OVERSEAS
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE FATHERLAND
Since 2010, a commemoration has been held at the monument every year on 10 May.
