The glass pyramid in Gulpen was built as a visitors' centre for which 8 local municipalities paid handsomely. Although at least 150,000 visitors a year were expected, only 10% found their way to Gulpen in the first six months. This is why the bankruptcy was filed. A salient detail: in order to build the pyramid, a barn was purchased that had to make way for it. The owner of that barn bought the pyramid after the bankruptcy.
