Built in 1391 by the Teutonic Order, Gemert Castle is a historical icon in the heart of Gemert. For centuries, the Castle functioned as the administrative centre of the Vrije Heerlijkheid Gemert, a unique area that was independent of local rulers. In the 18th century, the Castle received a major renovation in Louis XIV style, preserving its medieval core. The moat and surrounding park enhance the allure of this national monument, which shows a mix of medieval and baroque architecture.
Over the years, the Castle had various uses, including a cotton mill and later a novitiate of the French Jesuits. In 1916, it was taken over by the Fathers of the Holy Spirit, who established a major seminary there. Today, the Castle is a symbol of Gemert's rich history and a popular venue for cultural events and tours, ensuring that the stories of this special place continue to live on.
