Fort Kijkuit is a defensive structure from the nineteenth century, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (New Dutch Waterline). The fort has recently been restored, from abandoned fortification to inviting viewpoint. The former powder magazine has been transformed into an unmanned information room. It is open from Monday to Thursday. On every first Sunday afternoon of the month from April to October, the forester will welcome you there.
Visit the information point in the former powder house and learn more about the history of the fortress, the special nature in the area and about cycling, walking and sailing routes. From the viewpoint, you have a panoramic view of the Horstermeerpolder, the Wijde Blik nature reserve and windmill Gabriel. With a bit of luck, you may spot birds such as tufted ducks, grebes and kingfishers in the fort's moat. Picnic tables are scattered around the grounds. There is a landing stage for small boats.
