The wealthy widow Hd Hero gave a fixed and perpetual interest in 1553 to build a house for ‘twaleff guede, olde burghers schamele Weeskynden’. Even after her death, part of her possessions fell to the orphanage, where children aged three to 15 were cared for.

In addition to education and shelter, work was arranged for the children. Cows were milked and dairy products made, bread was baked and beer brewed.

Part of the orphanage was demolished in 1887, but the guardians‘ and guardianesses’ rooms are still present in the main building. The Orphanage is now a catering establishment.
