The name Epema dates from before the existence of the state. Initially there was a farm with a family with the first name Epe or Epa. A house was probably built around 1640, the gatehouse already existed. After the purchase, Duco Martena of Burmania would have been renovated. The house then passed on to the Burmania, Rengers and Van Welderen Rengers families for generations. Renovations and changes, in particular successive Van Welderen Rengers, result in the current appearance of the house. A payment to the landscape gardener Roodbaard emerges from a 19th century cash book. The amount is too small for a design, but it does indicate Redbeard's involvement.
