An unexpected and rather unknown place, but a beautiful environment! You walk through different landscapes here. Meadows lie next to moors, which then border bogs and moors. The paths are unpaved and through the bog you walk on a plank path. In the meadow is a cosy information shed where you can learn more about the area.
This nature reserve, the Empese & Tondense Heather, is located near the villages of Empe and Tonden. It offers a vast, watery landscape with fens. Especially in spring and summer, the area is at its most beautiful. Cornflowers and Spanish riders colour the area blue and purple. The moors and fens are a paradise for insects and birds, such as the rare red-backed shrike and dozens of rare insect species. In summer, you can see the moor blue and the slender armadillo here. Even if you don't know these species, the blue and green butterflies and dragonflies make for a beautiful picture.
