At the foot of the lighthouse is a memorial. The lion, laurel wreaths and the military Order of William are a tribute to Jan van Speyk, who has become known for his last words: 'Better get up in the air'.
During the Belgian uprising that led to Belgium's independence, he blew up his ship and himself, rather than surrender. The lighthouse can be climbed in July and August on Friday evening at 19.00 hours. Reservations in advance are necessary.
