Echten's first pumping station already drained the Veenpolder between 1856 and 1859. This pumping station was driven by wind power. In 1913, a steam pumping station was built and in 1925 it was in turn replaced by an electric one. The typical chimney was then demolished.
Since 2001, it has been a protected national monument. In the years since, the pumping station has been restored as much as possible to its original state. Even the huge chimney, which you can see from afar, has been replaced. Inside the pumping station you will now find a museum about its history and operation and an art gallery. A special location not only for this reason, but also because you have a view of the entire Tjeukemeer from the pumping station.
