The Drents Museum was founded in 1854. It started with a simple cupboard of objects and has been extended to a cabinet of a museum full of unique rooms! With over 90,000 objects, the collection of the Drents Museum is considered to be relatively abundant within the Dutch museum world. In size and quality, the Archaeology collection is one of the most important in Northwest Europe.
To do full justice to the historic centre of Assen, the new wing of the Drents Museum was built entirely underground between 2009 and 2011. On top of the large exhibition hall, a stray garden has been laid out, in which you cannot precisely see what are and are not through paths. The 12,000 plants have been selected in such a way that something blooms throughout the year.
