The museum was founded in 1842 and is therefore one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. At the time, it was located in the Boterbeurs building on the Wijnstraat in Dordrecht. In the first fifty years, the art collection grew so quickly that a move was necessary around 1900. The collection was moved to the Lindengracht, which is nowadays called the Museumstraat. Before the museum moved here, the building had been a monastery, an orphanage, a pest house and an asylum for the mentally ill.
In 2010, the museum underwent a thorough renovation, and a museum shop and restaurant were added. Today, the museum is more than four times as large as in 1904. It is now a place where people come to look, learn, meet and relax. Admire the varied collection of old, modern and contemporary art by Dordrecht painters such as Aelbert Cuyp, Ferdinand Bol, Karel Appel, Eugène Louis Boudin and more.
