Cycle route along the Sophia polder
Alblasserdam, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Papendrecht
Wedged in between Barendrecht and Dordrecht is an area of outstanding natural beauty. You will pass the natural island of Sophia polder. The polder was created as nature compensation for the Betuwe Line. The island developed into a freshwater tidal area where nature can take its own course. A real hotspot for birdwatchers: the nature on the island attracts many bird species. From the observation hut, you can observe the animals undisturbed. A ferry will take you there easily.
During this cycle route, you will also pass through Dordrecht, the city that became an island when the Sint Elisabethflood hit. Did you know that Dordrecht is the only Dutch city included in the list of thirty 'hidden jewels in Europe'? A trip to this city is therefore certainly a must!
