Hunebed D14 is perhaps the dolmen with the most violent past. Doctor van Giffen rated this dolmen as "disturbed and incomplete". Yet it was still quite complete with 6 capstones, 18 side stones, 2 keystones, 3 gate side stones and 8 coronary stones. Of the missing capstones, fragments still lie in the grave. They were once split with explosives, the drill holes of which are still visible.
Another capstone, before a restoration in 1996, had supported on a masonry pillar for many years. During that particular restoration, a dowel (steel pin) was used to pin down the huge stone. Yet on 25 April 2024, the huge megalith slid off the side stones again, while the pin was still standing. Investigations are currently underway as to how this could have happened.
This incident caused the association Het Drentse Landschap to pay extra attention to the awareness campaign around megaliths. The association wants to make people aware of the importance of the historical monuments, which they believe deserve respectful treatment. In the future, children with a hunebed passport can show that they respect the importance of the valuable monuments.
