The wreath stones around the mound may have been intended to maintain the mound. The hunebed forms the skeleton of the original burial monument.
The monument was inexpertly refurbished in 1870. When Dutch archaeologist Albert van Giffen conducted an investigation in 1957, it was found that the entire basement floor had disappeared. In earlier times, less value was placed on historical treasures than today. In one of the capstones, for instance, a row of 'drill' holes was discovered, once intended to split the stones into smaller pieces and use them for road construction or dyke reinforcement, for instance.
Of the largest capstone, the story goes that Louis Napoleon stood on it on horseback. Nice story, whether it is true we will probably never know for sure.
