Between Apeldoorn and Arnhem, and sandwiched between National Park the Hoge Veluwe and the Loenermark, you will find the Deelerwoud.
Near junction 85 is the entrance Loenen or De Woeste Hoogte.
This entrance is somewhat quieter than the one on the Deelen side and a fine place to look for game and birds. Fauna management in this region is determined by a collaboration of the owners of the various nature reserves. In 2001 they decided, that there would be no more shooting in the Deelerwoud.
As hunting disappeared from this area altogether, the lives of the animals were less affected by human behaviour. They became less shy, the flight distance changed and, moreover, the population increased. The chances of spotting wildlife here yourself in has thus increased considerably over the years.
If you pay attention, and have a good sense of timing, you can spot wild boar, red deer and fallow deer, among others, in this area. The Scottish Highlander is also an important grazer in this area, and since a few years the wolf has been active there.
Besides being a good place to spot wildlife, the Deelerwoud is also a paradise for birdwatchers. It is home to woodpeckers, flycatchers, tits, kestrels and many other species.
The Deelerwoud is accessible from sunrise to sunset. Around sunrise and sunset are therefore the best times to spot wildlife here. Park your bike and walk some of the marked walks. Don't forget to bring your binoculars.
