The history of the De Schaffelaar Estate goes back to the sixteenth century, when a castle stood on the Koewei near Barneveld, which was first called Hackfort and later Schaffelaar. However, both castles were destroyed. On 1 April 1852, Jasper Hendrik baron van Zuylen van Nievelt laid the foundation stone for the country house. The Barneveld baron spared no expense for his new home. He had 2.5 million red bricks and a large quantity of marble brought in from Italy. The surrounding estate was refurbished in 2005 by Het Geldersch Landschap.
The castle is now used as an events location for weddings, parties and business meetings. You can only visit the castle from the outside.
