Here you can still find the special, unique Goerese landscape with the ‘schurvelingen’. These are walls that farmers once built to protect their fields from the strong wind. Over time, they grew higher and became overgrown. Now they provide cover for all kinds of small animals, such as stoats. This mustelid is a fierce predator that has no trouble attacking and killing larger prey, such as rabbits.
As the Dutch landscape is becoming increasingly barren and tidy, stoats are finding it increasingly difficult to survive. That is why areas like De Kleistee are so important.
