On the middle of three islands surrounded by canals, on which the house now stands, there is a fortified mansion in the late Middle Ages, once owned by the Van Haemstede Montigny family. The Van Borssele and Van Brederode families follow them. The house was destroyed in the Eighty Years' War. In the 17th century, Anthonis Studler van Zurck developed the country estate here 't Oude Hof. Supposedly he shared the building plans with the philosopher Rene Descartes, where the gardens of Palais du Luxembourg inspired them. Only two outbuildings will be built. The property remained in the family until 1707. In 1830, the western annexe was demolished. In 1851 it was bought at auction by Jan J. van Reenen.
