Once Brunnepe was its own village, just outside the city wall of Kampen. The fishing village is probably even older than the city. It is now a district within Kampen.
When there was a danger of flooding on the former island of Schokland in 1859, many Schokkers were evacuated to surrounding towns on the mainland. Because the Schokkers were poor people, the rich Kampeners absolutely did not allow them to enter the city walls of Kampen. They ended up in Brunnepe.
Role in the book Vogeleiland:
For Berend, it becomes increasingly difficult to combine caring for little daughter Pup with his work. He places an advertisement in the local newspaper calling for a babysitter. He finds Mrs Visser, a woman in her early fifties who lives in Brunnepe. This is just perfect for Berend: he knows no one there and no one knows him.
