The Broederen church was built in the 14th century on land donated to the monks by Margaretha van Dampierre in 1293. They had settled in Zutphen a few years earlier. The church was built in Gothic style and in the 16th century the vaults received beautiful paintings.
Little has changed to the church, except that in 1772 a roof turret was built. The bell that hangs inside still rings between 9:50 and 10:00 p.m. as a warning that the city gates are being closed. Although they have not been there since the second half of the 19th century. Now the building houses the library.
