Herman de Man was born in this monumental house at Rijnstraat 24. Given the family's poverty, his parents probably rented a room in this building.

In 1998, a hundred years after his birth, a plaque was placed against the house. This was made by sculptor Jan Vermaat. The plaque incorporates the vignette that was in all his books, with the text 'not yet'. With this, the writer indicated that, in his opinion, he had not yet succeeded in writing the perfect book.
