Nature reserve Ottersaat, in the south of Texel, is a saltwater seepage lake containing a number of small islands. In some places, the land here was lowered to allow salt-loving plants such as glasswort, strawberry clover and sea aster to grow.
The area is a favourite nesting place for many different species of bird and a refuge for shorebirds when the tide is high outside the dike. So it is worthwhile to hop off here, take out your binoculars and very gently try to see if you can spot a common tern, a pied-billed plover or avocet.
