An elegant lady with a candy floss coloured hairdo and a wide hoop skirt suddenly ends up in the swamp. This is the beginning of a beautiful folk tale from Helmond. We are talking about the dowager empress Maria van Brabant (1190-1260). The story goes that she cried out in shock: ‘Ik bin d'r in! Ik bin d'r in!’ (‘I'm in it! I'm in it!’), after which she was saved by - yes indeed - the Holy Virgin.
Whether you believe it or not, one thing is certain: Mary of Brabant founded a monastery. The only reminder of this is the chapel from 1940 that you are now looking at. And of course the name: Binderen. Will you light a candle for Mary?
