Beer has been the most popular alcoholic drink in these parts for a few thousand years. But how is it brewed? What is malting and why is yeast so important?
Nationaal Biermuseum De Boom tells you all about it, using the tools, equipment and machines with which 'the golden water' has been brewed over the last two hundred years. Antique means of transport such as a hand cart and an ice sledge show how the beer barrels were transported. Posters and other advertising material, beer bottles and beer glasses give an impression of the many small and large Dutch breweries.
The museum is located in the historic building of the former De Boom brewery, near Alkmaar's famous cheese market. It was opened in April 1987 and has an official museum registration. Management and organisation is undertaken entirely by volunteers.
