This is Haarlem's oldest (still existing) courtyard. Although the court itself was built in 1395, the current buildings are no longer those of this era. In the 17th century, the houses were replaced and made room for a regent's room. Immediately after construction, 20 women could live here; after the conversion, only 12.
Residential courtyards were often built by the rich, as a place to live for single women with little money. The houses were small and they use a communal inner garden, or courtyard garden.
Now courtyards are quiet places in the bustling city. The gardens are often green and cosy. They show a different side of the city.
