The knights’ capital Zuylestein was first mentioned in 1536. After Frederik Hendrik van Oranje became the new owner in 1630, no costs and efforts were spared to give the house an aristocratic exterior. The gardens were also redesigned. Luckily, Zuylestein was spared looting by the French troops in 1672, but in March 1945 the house was destroyed by bombings. The orangery and the gateway building were restored and a beautiful gate was added, designed by Pierre Cuppers. In 1980 the family of van Aldenburg-Bentinck build a country house. The place is occasionally used for small scale events and also houses a quaint B&B.
