Located in the characteristically Dutch river landscape of the rivers Maas and Waal, you can find the impressive Ammersoyen Castle. This sturdy castle with its outbuildings is based within a dual moat. The various elements come together in stunning unity. Inside the castle with its authentic medieval interior the middle ages truly come to life.
Ammersoyen Castle was built around 1300 after the model of a castle type that was introduced by Earl Floris V. For better defense of the castle, the towers were built outside the central building. Ammersoyen is one of the best kept moated castles in Holland. During its restauration in the previous century, the moat was excavated and contained many finds. The moat was an archeological treasure house filled with pottery, silver, tin and bronze items. These items, which are partly showcased in the castle, gives visitors a good picture of 600 years of the castle’s history. The collection is extensive and coherent, which makes it the most impressive collection of moat finds in Holland.
