Water cycle route between Groningen and Drenthe

Zuidlaren, Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Veendam
This varied tour takes you along canals, lakes and the Veendam and Hoogezand-Sappemeer rivers. The route takes you along the Zuidlaarder Lake and a stretch of the Hunze river. You will cycle over the border between Groningen and Drenthe, past beautiful nature, historical sites and unique water landscapes. A perfect route for those who love peace, space and a touch of history.
Explore the former Botjes Zandgat sand excavation, which has now become a nature reserve and pond. From here, you can quickly reach the historic shipyard in Sappemeer, where you can delve into the local history of shipbuilding.
The Zuidlaarder Lake in Groningen is a beautiful environment in which to relax. Pause for a moment to enjoy the view of the rippling water, with sailboats gliding by. Windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts also know where to find the lake. You can also indulge in bird watching, sunbathe and even take a cooling dip in the water.
Then you follow the route along a stretch of the Hunze, a river that winds through the Drenthe landscape. Once an important trade route, it is now an idyllic nature reserve where you can cycle among the reed beds and marshes.
Finally, you reach the equally water-rich Veendam via the water-rich Borgerswold Park. Thanks to its many parks, this beautiful town is also known as ‘Park City’, and that also means many beautiful ponds.
