The ideal cycle route
Kootwijk, Garderen, Staverden
Deep in the forests of Ermelo lies Drie. Where Staverden claims the title: smallest town in the world, we suspect Drie may call itself the smallest village in the world. It consists of no more than a few houses and a restaurant. Despite officially being the smallest town in the Benelux, Staverden does have a beautiful white castle. The castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and the Veluwe countryside, so it's a nice place to stop off!
How old Kootwijk is is not known. In the year 1838, an old anchor was found in the tower of the church with the inscription ‘1010’. So it could well be that this village, like Garderen, was already inhabited in the Middle Ages.
You would have been very close to not cycling to Garderen at all. In 1811, 17 of the then village's 25 houses burned to the ground. Fortunately, this picturesque village has been rebuilt and is a popular attraction for tourists, hikers and cyclists. Not surprising, considering how beautiful the nature around Garderen is....
