The Gelderland Castles Route (part 3)
Arnhem, Oosterbeek, Velp
The province of Gelderland is characterised by beautiful nature, numerous castles and their estates. Organisation Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen proudly cares for many of these castles, but only seven are open to the public. Get to know the public castles in five beautiful cycle routes through the landscape of Gelderland. With this stage, you will cycle past no fewer than three castles, all located around Arnhem.
In the green oasis of Park Zypendaal stands the manor house of the same name. This country house dates from the 18th century. On the ground floor, rooms are decorated in the historical style. You can visit the castle on certain Sundays each month, check the website of the stepping stone.
You then cycle out of the city of Arnhem towards Oosterbeek and Doorwerth. On this road, you traverse beautiful forests and estates. Located on the Lower Rhine and just a little south-west of Doorwerth is the next Gelderland Castle. Doorwerth Castle is a medieval castle that is still very complete. You can admire four collections inside: the castle rooms, the Dutch Hunting Museum, the National Forestry Collection and Museum Veluwezoom. Put your bike down for a visit and be sure not to forget to take a stroll through the surrounding garden and orchard!
The route takes you back to Arnhem via the beautiful countryside of the Veluwe. Through dense woodland, streams and puddles, you arrive at Rosendael Castle. This castle lies on the edge of the Veluwezoom national park. Not only is the castle beautiful - inside and out, in the Rosendael park of the same name surrounding the castle you will find shell galleries, a tea dome, beautiful ponds and fountains. So you are guaranteed to enjoy plenty of natural beauty here!
Tip: before you get on your bike, always check the opening hours of the castles, as most are not open daily.
