Terrace route Sneekermeer
Sneek, Terherne
Discover the most beautiful terraces at the Sneekermeer, or in Frisian: the Snitsermar! This delightful cycle route takes you along Frisian waterways, cosy marinas and waterside terraces.
The Sneekermeer is central here, but you also cycle along the Terhernse pools. The largest of these is the Sâltpoel, or ‘Zoutepoel’. This pond was created by digging up peat, something that used to happen a lot in this area to extract salt. By burning the peat, raw salt was left over. Around Terherne, this created a landscape filled with water and turned this Frisian village into an island.
Admire the characteristic houses in Terherne's harbour, cycle past the cosy church or visit the Snitsermar beach. Of course, the real highlight is what the island is known for: Kameleondorp.
Continue along the lake shores. Thanks to the flat landscape, you can see endlessly far. Can you already see the Goïngarijp bell tower? This is a typical sight in south-west Friesland. They often stand near a small church. Because some villages could not afford church bells in the past, they had a belfry built from which bells could still be rung.
In Goïngarijp, you can taste more typical Friesland: visit the local brewery Gudzekop. These brewers prefer to use local products in their beer. How about a beer in the flavours of Frisian sugar bread or Frisian spice cake?
During this cycle route, you will pass through cosy Sneek. The beautiful city centre originated as early as the 10th century. The town is criss-crossed by canals and is partly located on a mound so you may encounter some slight height differences.
Note: you will use several ferries, always check the sailing times in advance.
