Terrace route along old waterfront towns

Dordrecht, Papendrecht, Sliedrecht
Along the banks of the Merwede, you cycle through Sliedrecht, Papendrecht and Dordrecht. Sliedrecht used to consist of two parts, called Slydregt and Over-Slydregt. After the devastating Sint-Elisabethflood in 1412, the lower part was swept away. On that spot is now the Biesbosch. The remaining part, Over-Slydregt, became the Sliedrecht we know today.
Because of its waterfront location, fishing and dredging were the main sources of income here for a long time. The town has a rich history and invites you to enjoy the surroundings while relaxing on a terrace with delicious snacks and drinks.
Papendrecht is also an old settlement in the Alblasserwaard, mentioned in documents as early as 1105. The village came into existence after a dike was built, making it a typical dike village. For a long time, Papendrecht was owned by noble families; it was not until 1816 that it got its own municipal government. In the second half of the 20th century, the place started to grow and now it is a cosy place to be.
Then we have Dordrecht, an important commercial city that gained city rights in 1220. Its favourable location on the water made it an important centre for trade for a long time, and this history can still be felt in the atmospheric city centre. However, the city not only has a rich trading tradition; in 1572, the First Free States Assembly took place here and Stadhouder Willem I (prince of Orange) was recognised by the Dutch cities. During the end of the Second World War, there was heavy fighting for freedom in the Dordrecht area.
This cycle route takes you past historic places in South Holland, each with its own story. Take a seat on a terrace and be surprised by the old town centres and special sights.
