Workum, Piaam, Nijhuizum

Starting point and end point of this Cycle route is minicamping Sathe Landzicht in Nijhuizum. This cycle tour introduces you to the charming centre of Workum. Here, you immediately come face to face with the artistic heart of the town with the fountain ‘The Savage Lions of Workum’, one of the impressive works of art from the 11Fountains route.

Jopie Huisman also brought art to Workum. Visit the museum dedicated to this Frisian self-taught painter, whose realistic and loving art reveals the soul of Frisian rural life. From here, the route leads you along the picturesque streets and characteristic facades to Workum's historic lighthouse. This monumental beacon on the IJsselmeer is a symbol of the region's rich maritime history and offers stunning views over the water.

From the lighthouse, you continue cycling along the glistening waters of the IJsselmeer towards Makkum. Via that countryside, you continue the route to a typical Frisian picture: the bell tower of Greonterp.

The bike path along the Flakke Brekken and Aldegeaster Brekken is often praised as the most beautiful bike path in Friesland, thanks to its combination of wide views and beautiful water landscapes. As you ride along the rippling water, you pass the historic Monnikenburenmolen, a characteristic polder mill that has graced the Frisian landscape for centuries.
